Free Things to Do in Limerick

It wasn't until I went to write this article that I realised how much there is to do with kids in Limerick for free. OK some may involve a car journey, but it doesn't have to be the same places each time.  Pick an area to visit, compile a list of the places to visit beforehand and have fun!

Visit the Field of Dreams Limerick's Animal Santuary at Moorestown, Kilfinane. With dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, goats,  pot-bellied black pigs, donkeys,  ponies and rabbits it as good as any Pet Farm. Learn about what happens at the Sanctuary and how to be a responsible pet owner. It's open to the public 11am  - 3pm Monday to Saturday. Closed Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Libraries What a great way to spend a couple of hours, read the kids stories and even if they can read themselves it's a nice way of having quality time with them.  There are pictures to colour, the PCs are usually setup for kids to use child friendly games, and often the libraries have arts and crafts or story telling sessions on.

Some free indoor options include Limerick City Museum, Limerick City Gallery or the Hunt Museum is free on Sunday between 2 and 5 pm, ask for their Treasure Hunt sheet for the kids. The Hunt Museum also is runs a Free Arts and Crafts club the First Sunday of most months. Check our events section for details

Playgrounds We now have a good number of play areas in Limerick open for kids, pack a picnic and head off for a few hours. Most of the playgrounds are in parks so if they get bored with the play area - walk, cycle or scoot around the park and stop at different areas to see what's in the park or what nature is doing at the different times of the year.

Woodland Walks - the ones we visit are Glenstal Woods, Murroe, Clare Glens and Curragh Chase (small fee to enter there). There are so many walks and trails it would be hard to mention all so check out Coillte, Ballyhoura County and Shannon Regional Trails for more ideas.

Limerick has a lot of historical sites such as the stone circle, standing stones, wedge tombs, Passage Tomb, Bullaun stone, Knockadoon holy wells and many other types of Megalithic Monuments. These sites are fascinating for children and the history behind them even more so. How about visiting the Entrance to Tir Na Nog?

Organise a day trip to different Heritage towns around Limerick and visit the local heritage attractions  Adare, Medieval Kilmallock, Foynes, Newcastlewest and Bruree to name but a few.

Check out our events listings as there are usually free events on in Limerick nearly every other weekend !
